Prabal Gurung, who may well be the world’s most free-thinking fashion designer, has launched his first activewear collection: Prabal Gurung Sport, available exclusively at BANDIER. The collection, an essential mix of sporty separates, intuits the needs of today’s passionately active woman, whom Gurung views as “very much on the go and in charge.”

The collection comes to life on Hailey Baldwin, who fronts the launch campaign, animating Gurung’s inspiration — “the graphic lines, pure adrenaline and high energy of NYC” — a veritable Broadway Boogie Woogie to the beat of the city’s new circuitry — a dynamic rhythm that would Prabal-y please Piet Mondrian.

For Gurung, a celebrated designer of ready-to-wear, whose Vogue-approved resume includes a Parsons degree and stints at Donna Karan and Bill Blass — and whose celebrity clientele include everyone from Kate Hudson to Michelle Obama — the move into activewear represents an evolution and continuation of his lifelong service to “smart and mindful women, who take confidence in who they are, and are empowered by that confidence.” Gurung maintains that this collection is less of a departure and more of an organic iteration of the now: “The Prabal Gurung Sport woman is an extension of the woman we design for today. She is the Prabal Gurung woman off-duty, in her leisure time when she isn’t working the boardroom or red carpet.”

With the irresistible and omnipresent Hailey Baldwin helming the campaign, there’s no doubt that we’ll be seeing the supermodel-elevated activewear off-duty fashion-set (think Gigi, Kendall, Bella) rocking Prabal Gurung Sport from the studio to the street. “The idea behind this collection is for our ready-to-wear and active collections to be somewhat interchangeable — the PG Sport bomber can be mixed with a great trouser, and our ready-to-wear knits can easily be thrown on with the activewear leggings.”

Gurung’s choice to launch his activewear collection exclusively at BANDIER, which he calls, “a pioneer in the active movement,” was a natural one, because BANDIER, according to Gurung, “has created a wonderful interactive environment, bringing athletics, fashion and music together,” and he’s “very attracted to the merging of these worlds.”

BANDIER founder, Jennifer Bandier, believes that this launch will emerge as a watershed moment in the history of active fashion. “When a designer like Prabal brings his unique artistic vision, his meticulous design approach and tireless drive — which I’ve been a fan of for years — to the activewear space, it really feels like the moment when fashion and fitness have fused.”

And with the winds of change blowing strongly on the new frontiers of fashion, it's refreshing to hear Gurung, an unfairly mindful soul — hailing, as he does, from Nepal, the birthplace of Buddha — speak of all that remains constant: “With everything I create, I aim to evoke modern glamour. With this collection, the glamour is in the details, the ease, and the high quality.”
