HI, ALY AND COLETTE! we’re excited to learn a little bit more about you two. what inspired you to start the ness?

We were both dancers for the majority of our lives, so movement has always been important to us. We are also really passionate about sharing movement with others — we always knew we wanted our business to be centered around building a community that shares a love of movement.

Why is it called The Ness? What is the story behind the name?

The word “ness” is a suffix that denotes a quality or a state of being which is ever evolving and changing. We believe that’s true of movement; that your movement should change with you to support and reflect your ness. Most obviously, you see the word ending “ness” in words like fitness, wellness, mindfulness, but what we love about it is that it can also be applied to other words — hotness, boldness, coolness — to help us define our ness everyday.

What are the benefits of The Ness NYC’s movement method?

The first benefit that comes to mind is the efficiency of the trampoline. NASA studies show that trampoline is 3x as effective as running — in just 10 minutes of bouncing on a trampoline, you build the same amount of endurance and burn the same amount of energy as you would in 30 minutes of running. The second major benefit is that our method is entirely low impact, but still high intensity. Everything we do, on and off the trampoline, is designed to deliver a challenging and effective workout that doesn’t put any additional strain on your joints, allowing our method to have longevity in your life.

Can you take us through the steps of a typical workout, both on and off the trampoline?

We offer a variety of different classes in both the bounce and sculpt categories, so each class looks very different. However, a throughline in our method is that whether you’re moving with us on the ground or on the trampoline, everything we do is beat based and choreography based. We design our classes so that you’re mentally engaged and challenged by learning either one long routine, or many smaller routines throughout class.

What advice would you give other entrepreneurs in the fitness space?

Stay true to yourself in what you offer and the way you offer it. Avoid changing your class or your method based on what you see other people doing around you. If you remain authentic in your work and focus on being the best at what you do, the people will come and the people will love it.
